The U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee has called for an investigation by the Defense Department Inspector General into top officials’ use of the Signal chat app to discuss plans for bombing Yemen. Senators Roger Wicker and Jack Reed raised concerns about the alleged sharing of classified information on an unclassified network and the involvement of unauthorized individuals in the chat, including Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic.
The senators requested an assessment of DOD classification policies and processes, as well as an investigation into the transfer of classified information from secure to insecure systems. They also called for a comparison of classification policies among different government agencies represented on the National Security Council.
The controversy, dubbed Signalgate, arose when The Atlantic published excerpts of the chat involving high-ranking officials like Vice President J.D. Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. While Hegseth denied sharing classified information, Wicker expressed concern about the sensitivity of the information shared.
The Defense Department Inspector General’s office is currently reviewing the senators’ request for an investigation. The outcome of the inquiry could lead to recommendations for addressing any identified issues. President Trump and White House officials have downplayed the significance of using a commercial app for discussing military actions, but the senators believe the matter warrants further scrutiny.
