Tennessee Baseball Faces Challenges Ahead of Auburn Series
Knoxville, TN – As the Tennessee Volunteers gear up to host the No. 10 Auburn Tigers this weekend at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, the team is navigating a challenging landscape of injuries and eligibility issues. On Thursday, the Vols reported that only one player, Alberto Osuna, is OUT as he seeks eligibility for the season. A recent development saw Osuna’s legal team motion for reconsideration in a Knoxville judge’s denial of his preliminary injunction.
Pitcher Tanner Wiggins, although not on the availability report, will also be absent after undergoing emergency oral surgery from a foul ball injury sustained against Kentucky two weeks ago. Wiggins is currently recovering at his home in Knoxville.
Ranked No. 12 nationally, Tennessee (36-9, 13-8 SEC) is looking to rebound after a tough stretch, having lost three of their last four SEC series. They dropped two of three to Kentucky and faced a rough weekend against LSU, including a heartbreaking loss aided by critical errors in the ninth inning of the opener.
Despite these setbacks, the Vols managed a strong 11-1 victory over Lipscomb earlier this week, showcasing their potential as they prepare for the Tigers. Freshman RHP Brayden Krenzel, who recently returned from injury, is set to play a crucial role in the bullpen, as head coach Tony Vitello expressed confidence in Krenzel’s ability to perform under pressure.
The series begins on Friday at 6:30 PM ET, with games continuing on Saturday at 6 PM and Sunday at 1 PM. Both teams will look to secure vital SEC wins as they approach the postseason, with the SEC Tournament commencing May 20 in Hoover, Alabama.
