Tennessee Coach Tony Vitello Ejected Again in Loss to Auburn
Tennessee baseball coach Tony Vitello’s fiery demeanor led to his fifth career ejection after a heated argument with umpires during Sunday’s game against Auburn at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The Bulldogs capped off a frustrating weekend with an 8-1 loss, marred by inclement weather and contentious calls.
The controversy began with a check swing decision that left Vitello irate. His animated discussion with home plate umpire John Brammer escalated, prompting Vitello to walk around the infield to confront other umpires, including Javerro January at third, Ben Levin at second, and Richard Riley at first base, all while gesticulating furiously.
“The ejection stemmed from a sequence of missed calls,” Vitello explained post-game, referencing a strikeout that left Tennessee’s Levi Clark frustrated as they trailed 4-0. By the time Vitello was officially tossed with one out in the fifth, Auburn had already loaded the bases and added to their lead with two walks.
This particular game was already tense, having resumed after a suspension due to rain that affected the previous night’s matchup. A significant moment earlier occurred when Tennessee pitcher Liam Doyle tagged out an Auburn player at home, leading to a bench-clearing exchange of words but only Doyle facing ejection.
Vitello chastised the officials for the lack of accountability, commenting, “Two adults competing should be allowed to express themselves.” The ejection also resulted in a two-game suspension for Doyle, who had performed admirably under tough conditions.
Vitello lamented that such frustrations detract from the game, expressing hope that competitiveness could be encouraged rather than penalized. The Volunteers look to regroup as they prepare for their upcoming match against Indiana State.
