Anthony Weiner Considers New Run for NYC Council
Disgraced former Congressman Anthony Weiner is contemplating a political comeback, targeting a seat on the New York City Council. During his weekly radio show on 77WABC, the 60-year-old stated, “I’m thinking about it. I’m wrestling with it,” expressing a desire to serve the community beyond his current role in radio.
Weiner, who hasn’t held public office since being ousted in 2011 due to a sexting scandal, has faced significant personal challenges. After multiple scandals involving inappropriate messages to women and a minor, he served 21 months in prison for sexting a 15-year-old in North Carolina. He was released in 2019, labeling himself “a very sick man” at his sentencing.
His tumultuous past includes a failed mayoral bid that was further marred by another sexting incident. Weiner’s high-profile marriage to Huma Abedin, a close aide to Hillary Clinton, added to his public scrutiny, especially when his laptop became a pivotal piece of the FBI’s probe into Clinton’s email practices, impacting the 2016 presidential election.
With the City Council seat of Carlina Rivera expected to be open in 2025, Weiner may seize the opportunity to re-enter politics. However, he acknowledges that his controversial history might hinder his prospects. “The things in my past, the things about my addiction… it’s a lot,” he remarked, recognizing the challenges ahead.
Despite his troubled past, Weiner believes the current political landscape requires bold leadership from Democrats. “We seem like we come into knife fights carrying library books all the time,” he noted, hinting at a possible strategy to navigate his return to political life amidst the challenges he faces.
