12 Inmates Charged Following Trousdale Turner Correctional Riot
HARTSVILLE, Tenn. – District Attorney Jason Lawson has announced charges against 12 inmates involved in a violent riot at Trousdale Turner Correctional Center, Tennessee’s largest prison, which occurred in June. The charges include aggravated riot, aggravated assault, and aggravated kidnapping, among others. The identities of the charged individuals remain undisclosed at this time.
The riot escalated to the point where three correctional officers were taken hostage; one suffered injuries during the incident. In reaction, 75 state troopers were dispatched to regain control of the facility. Disturbing footage from the riot has surfaced on social media showing inmates actively abusing a corrections officer, with demands such as "Mace him" captured in the clips. The video depicts the officer being manhandled and coerced into stripping down before being subjected to further humiliation.
CoreCivic, the company managing the prison, has stated that the footage will be used as evidence in the ongoing investigation. Despite the concerning nature of the incident, neither CoreCivic nor the District Attorney’s office has identified the inmate who recorded the video.
The presence of cell phones in prisons has sparked significant concern, allowing inmates to produce and share video content, including cooking demonstrations, and engage in potentially nefarious activities. As noted by Tony Curtis, president of the prison guard union at FCI Memphis, unauthorized cell phones pose a serious threat to prison security.
