Poll Reveals Growing Concerns Over GOP’s "Big, Beautiful Bill"
WASHINGTON, D.C. — A recent poll by the nonpartisan KFF reveals widespread disapproval of the GOP’s sweeping legislative package, nicknamed the “big, beautiful bill.” While 61% of Republicans and 72% of MAGA supporters back the bill, an overwhelming 64% of Americans overall oppose its proposed tax policy changes and spending cuts.
The poll highlights stark partisan divides; just 13% of Democrats and 27% of independents view the legislation favorably. Opposition to the bill deepens when potential consequences are considered. For instance, the percentage of people against it rises to 67% upon learning it could cut over $700 billion from Medicaid, and to 79% when informed it might reduce funding for local hospitals.
KFF President Drew Altman noted that public perceptions can shift with more information, suggesting many Americans are still processing the bill’s implications.
In the Senate, GOP lawmakers are engaged in internal debates concerning which parts of the House package to retain, modify, or discard. Senate Majority Leader John Thune aims to bring a revised version to the floor soon, although that timeline could shift.
Despite the bill’s unpopularity, there is significant bipartisan support for Medicaid, with 83% of Americans expressing approval for the program, regardless of political affiliation. However, when asked about a new requirement for certain Medicaid recipients to work or engage in community service, public opinion is mixed, especially when concerns about potential loss of coverage are raised.
Additionally, 67% oppose language in the bill that would block Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood, a sentiment that strengthens to 80% when details about funding allocations are clarified. Public anxiety also extends to changes in SNAP, with 70% worried about access to food for lower-income families.
As the Senate prepares to debate this controversial bill, the GOP continues to grapple with unifying their party in the face of significant public dissent.
