Who perished in the helicopter crash with Iran’s President Raisi? | Politics News

Iran is in mourning after a devastating helicopter crash in the country’s East Azerbaijan province that claimed the lives of President Ebrahim Raisi, his foreign minister, and other senior officials. The accident, which occurred in dense fog and snow, has left the nation in shock and challenges its senior leadership during a time of heightened regional tensions, particularly related to the war in Gaza.

President Raisi, a hardline religious conservative with deep ties to Iran’s judiciary, had risen through the ranks over the years to become the country’s leader in 2021. He faced controversy, particularly surrounding his role in overseeing executions of political prisoners in 1988 and his support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government.

Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian played a significant role in shifting Iran’s foreign policy towards improving relations with regional neighbors, including a diplomatic thaw with Saudi Arabia. He was travelling across the Middle East to coordinate with allies during the war in Gaza.

Other officials who perished in the crash included the governor of East Azerbaijan Province, Malek Rahmati, and Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Al-Hashem, the supreme leader’s representative to the province. Additionally, the head of Raisi’s guard team and the helicopter’s flight crew were among the victims.

Aviation experts indicated that the lack of communication from the pilot likely indicated a serious technical issue leading to the crash. The tragic incident has left Iran reeling from the loss of key figures in its leadership and raises questions about the nation’s future.
