Russian military launches extensive assault on Ukrainian energy facilities

Russian forces launched a massive nighttime attack on Ukraine’s power grid, firing over 50 cruise missiles and explosive drones in seven different regions of the country, causing damage to homes, rail networks, and injuring three people. This attack is part of a broader strategy to disrupt Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, with nearly half of it already damaged since Russia’s invasion in February 2022. Ukrainian officials have been pleading for more NATO-standard air defense systems to counter these attacks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, noting its occurrence on a day that Ukraine commemorates the end of fighting in World War II. He emphasized the need for a united free world to stop Russian President Vladimir Putin. The attacks also come amidst suspicions of Moscow stockpiling resources for a major offensive in the coming weeks.

In response to the attacks, the Ukrainian air force downed 39 missiles and 20 drones, while Russian forces also damaged a railway station building and train tracks in Kherson. Additionally, an educational facility in northeastern Kharkiv was struck, injuring five people, including three children.

This latest assault adds to the ongoing conflict that has claimed thousands of lives and caused extensive damage to infrastructure in Ukraine. The situation remains volatile, with both sides engaging in attacks and counterattacks, threatening further escalation and humanitarian crisis in the region.
