Israel has issued new evacuation orders in Gaza’s southern city of Rafah, forcing tens of thousands of people to move as the military operation expands. The orders, issued on Saturday, have now evacuated the eastern third of Rafah, moving into the heavily populated central area. President Joe Biden has stated that the United States will not provide offensive weapons to Israel due to its offensive in Rafah, facing international opposition and criticism.
The United Nations and other agencies have warned that an Israeli assault on Rafah could severely impact humanitarian operations and result in a surge of civilian casualties. With over 1.4 million Palestinians seeking shelter in Rafah after fleeing bombardments in other parts of Gaza, this city serves as the last refuge in the area. The evacuations are now forcing people to return north to areas previously devastated by attacks.
Many individuals have been displaced multiple times, and there are limited options for relocation within the already embattled Gaza Strip. Those fleeing fighting have set up tent camps in cities like Khan Younis and Deir el-Balah, which have already been partially destroyed by previous offensives, putting strain on already fragile infrastructure.
The ongoing situation in Rafah highlights the urgent need for a ceasefire and humanitarian access to provide aid to displaced civilians. As tensions escalate, the international community must continue to call for a peaceful resolution to the crisis in Gaza.
