Tennessee Senate Passes Legislation Requiring Public School Students to Watch Anti-Abortion AI Video
Tennessee is on the verge of becoming the latest state to mandate that public school students watch a three-minute AI-generated video on fetal development produced by the pro-life group Live Action. The legislation, known as the “Baby Olivia Act,” has already been passed by the state Senate in a 21-6 vote and is now awaiting Republican Gov. Bill Lee’s signature.
Under the proposed law, schools will be required to incorporate the video, or an equivalent, into their family life curriculum. The video aims to depict early fetal development through computer-generated animation or high-definition ultrasound. The bill has sparked debate, with critics arguing that it does not provide unbiased or medically accurate information.
While supporters of the legislation, including Rep. Gino Bulso, argue that the video is scientifically accurate and endorsed by medical professionals, opponents believe it is misleading and goes against the principles of education. Despite opposition from Democrats, the bill passed in both the House and Senate.
Once signed, the law will go into effect for the 2024-2025 school year. Tennessee will join North Dakota in adopting similar legislation, with other states considering similar measures. Critics of the bill, including Democratic Rep. Justin Jones, argue that it blends religious beliefs with science and presents students with medically inaccurate information. Despite concerns raised by opponents, the bill is expected to become law in the near future.
