The IRS has launched a new online pilot program called Direct File, designed to help taxpayers with simple tax situations file their returns online. Tennessee is one of twelve trial states participating in this program. With just a few days left before the tax deadline, IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel encourages Tennesseans with simple W-2s and standard deductions to use Direct File this tax season. The program has been operating smoothly in the test states since its launch a month ago.
According to the Treasury Department, a third of all federal income tax returns filed this season could be prepared using Direct File. Werfel visited Knoxville to promote the new program and encourage taxpayers to take advantage of this free electronic filing option. He also advised taxpayers who may not meet the tax deadline to file for an extension, emphasizing that payments must still be made by April 15th.
Werfel warned about tax season scams and reminded taxpayers to stay alert, as scammers tend to target individuals during this time. He emphasized that the IRS will never make immediate demands for payment or threaten individuals over the phone. Direct File is meant to be a free and user-friendly alternative to other filing options, and the IRS aims to slowly build its operational base.
To learn more about Direct File and how to use the program, taxpayers can visit directfile.irs.gov. The IRS Commissioner hopes that more Tennesseans will utilize this convenient tool to file their taxes and potentially receive refunds they are owed.
