Tennessee’s new scholarship program designed to address shortage of mental health professionals

A new scholarship program in Tennessee is aiming to address the shortage of mental health professionals in the state by offering financial assistance to students pursuing post-graduate degrees in behavioral health. Eligible students can receive up to $15,000 a year for two years to cover tuition costs for master’s degrees in counseling, psychiatric nursing, social work, psychology, or similar fields. In return, students commit to working for a Tennessee public behavioral health provider for an equal amount of time.

One recipient, Carsen Hill, who overcame an opioid addiction and dreamed of becoming a therapist, was ecstatic to receive the scholarship, allowing her to pursue her passion without financial stress. The program was established during a special legislative session in August to attract and retain mental health professionals in the state.

Since applications opened in February, the program has received over 500 applications, highlighting the need for financial assistance in pursuing careers in behavioral health. While the funding for the program was initially a one-time investment, officials hope to continue offering it in the future.

Overall, the program aims to support students in pursuing careers in mental health professions and ultimately address the critical shortage of mental health professionals in Tennessee. For more information on the scholarship program, interested individuals can visit the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services’ website.
