The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team suffered an 8-3 loss to Lindenwood in Game 2 of the weekend series at Skyhawk Field. Despite a strong offensive performance from Mac Danford, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, the Skyhawks were unable to overcome an early lead established by Lindenwood. Pitcher Eric Steensma was charged with the loss, allowing four earned runs. However, the Skyhawk bullpen only allowed two runs over the final seven innings, with Choyce Diffey, Zach Wager, and Kaleb Baskin putting in solid relief appearances.
Lindenwood scored early in the first and second innings to take a commanding lead. UT Martin managed to score in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Cole Smith. Diffey pitched three shutout innings, escaping potential jams, and Wager and Baskin also kept the Lions off the scoreboard during their appearances.
In the sixth inning, Lindenwood added two more runs, but Wager stranded two runners in the eighth with a crucial outfield assist from Will Smith. UT Martin attempted a comeback in the eighth, with Danford hitting a two-run single, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.
The rubber match of the series will take place in Game 3, with Senior Day festivities honoring 17 Skyhawks before the game. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+. This will be the final home game for the seniors in their UT Martin careers.
