Arab leaders at a summit in Bahrain have accused Israel of obstructing efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza and demanded an immediate end to the ongoing conflict. The Arab League called for a United Nations peacekeeping force in the Palestinian territories until a two-state solution is implemented. President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt, who is mediating between Hamas and Israel, also criticized Israel for evading ceasefire efforts.
The summit highlighted the dire situation in Gaza, where over 35,000 people have been killed in Israel’s assault, and severe restrictions on food, water, and humanitarian supplies have caused food shortages and the threat of famine. The Arab League also condemned attacks on commercial ships by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who claim to be targeting ships linked to Israel in solidarity with Palestinians.
The Arab League reiterated its support for a two-state solution with East Jerusalem as the Palestinian capital and called on all Palestinian factions to unite under the umbrella of the Palestine Liberation Organization. However, the Arab League has long been seen as toothless in resolving conflicts in the region, including the Arab-Israeli war in 1967 that saw Israel seize Palestinian territories.
The international community has condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, with many viewing the settlements in East Jerusalem and the West Bank as illegal under international law. The Arab League’s call for peacekeeping forces and a two-state solution reflects ongoing efforts to end the conflict and achieve lasting peace in the region.
