Two Oak Ridge High School students, Norah Younger and Max Mishler, made their Broadway debut after winning the Outstanding Actress and Outstanding Actor at the Tennessee Theatre’s Marquee Awards. They spent nearly two weeks in New York City rehearsing for the Jimmy Awards showcase, which took place at the Minskoff Theatre on June 24. The experience included workshops, rehearsals, and a behind-the-scenes look at the Tony Awards. The students described it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and advised future participants to be prepared and stay present. They also had their headshots featured on a Times Square billboard.
The Tennessee Theatre Executive Director Becky Hancock expressed excitement about how East Tennessee was represented by Norah and Max. The Marquee Awards aim to elevate cultural arts in the region and provide students with the tools needed for success on the musical stage. The students mentioned their gratitude for the opportunities brought by the Marquee Awards, with Mishler expressing a desire to return to Broadway as a performer, while Younger plans to pursue acting alongside a teaching certification in art education.
Both students praised the experience of meeting like-minded individuals and working with Broadway professionals, adding that it gave them a first-hand look at the industry. The students encouraged others to take advantage of the opportunity, and the Tennessee Theatre is currently accepting submissions for the 2025 Marquee Awards. Schools interested can find more information on the theatre’s website, with sign-ups accepted until September 3.
