Bettors globally are turning to sportsbooks to place bets on the 2024 presidential election, with the odds shifting in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris as she has assumed the presumptive nomination and started campaigning. U.K. bookmaker Bet365 initially had Harris at +200 but has since shortened her odds to +137, while President Donald Trump’s odds have shifted from -200 to -175. Similar changes have been seen at other offshore books surveyed by USA TODAY. As of July 29, the odds for the 2024 general election were as follows: Bet 365 had Trump at -175 and Harris at +137, Bovada had Trump at -165 and Harris at +130, BetOnline had Trump at -145 and Harris at +130, and Oddschecker had Trump at -141 and Harris at +158.
Historically, the betting favorite has only lost twice since 1866, with upsets occurring in 1948 when Harry Truman defeated Thomas Dewey and in 2016 when Trump overcame Hillary Clinton. In the 2020 election, Joe Biden was the betting favorite from May through November. Despite the accuracy of betting odds in past elections, anything can happen in politics, making the 2024 presidential race an interesting one to watch for both bettors and observers.
